TO LIVE IN HEARTS
WE LEAVE BEHIND
IS NOT TO DIE

PRIVATE RAYMOND EVERITT BAYLISS

AUSTRALIAN MACHINE GUN CORPS

25TH APRIL 1917 AGE 23

BURIED: GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY, FRANCE

Raymond Bayliss was a twenty-three-year-old farmer from Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia whose brother, Ernest Foord, was also killed. Raymond's inscription is a quote from Hallowed Ground by Thomas Campbell (1777-1844).
But strew his ashes to the wind
Whose sword or voice has served mankind,
And is he dead, whose glorious mind
Lifts thine on high?
To live in hearts we leave behind
Is not to die.
